Hand-knotting I Weaving I Material exploration I Wool felting

About Project
Brief : Designing customisable or modular floor coverings optimized for manufacturing & production.
Client : Obeetee

Mentor : Vatsal Agrawal, Anusha Dhawan
Concept : 'Multiple Binding' The direction was motivated by the notion of multiple layers of binding within the same hand-knotted carpet / rugs and inventing a product that can have multiple parts in it and can be used in multiple ways.
Process : The process focused on creating a versatile product with multiple functional parts within hand-knotted carpets. By incorporating wool felting between two bindings, the technique secures and conceals the bind, preventing thread unraveling while enhancing durability. Additionally, wool felting introduces a soft texture variation, complementing the hand-knotting technique to create a distinct visual and tactile contrast, making the carpet both functional and aesthetically unique.

Time Frame : 4 weeks
Testing Prototype
Through knotting technique carpet has been woven with addition of felt weaving, so that dry wool felting can be done on it.

Front side
The carpet prototype features four distinct sections of hand-knotted weaving(with white wool), between each section, felt is woven(in red color), reinforcing the structure and preventing unraveling.

Back side
The inside edges are secured using the traditional carpet side binding technique(with blue color), ensuring durability.

The woven felt undergoes wool felting to seamlessly conceal the felt and binding, ensuring a secure structure.

The carpet prototype is cut from the wool-felted section to test its structural integrity and ensure that the threads remain secure without unraveling.
Final Design Prototype
This prototype explores hand-knotting combined with wool felting for enhanced durability and versatility. Between two contrasting colors, felt is woven and felted, securing the knots and preventing unraveling when cut. This integration not only ensures structural integrity but also adds a soft texture contrast, creating a distinct visual and tactile appeal.
